Problems Don’t Fix Themselves Overnight

My initial thought when I read about Gov. Schweitzer and the National Park Service’s deal to allow the migration of some buffalo onto the land of the CUT ranch outside Yellowstone Park, was that the number of allowed migrations didn’t seem that substantial. Upon second thought, it’s clear that in the case of one of the most divisive wildlife issues facing Montana, the fact that some parties are getting together and working towards solutions is refreshing.

Of course the Buffalo Field Campaign complains that it’s not enough… And the livestock industry will complain that it’s too much. The fact remains that during the course of an 8 year impasse, no progress has been made to address this issue. When the two largest stakeholders in this area have dug their heels in for nearly a decade, a little leadership on behalf of the Gov and NPS is a welcome change. Maybe some of our neighboring states will be inspired and decide to do something about the feed lots that are a way bigger problem than roaming bison have ever been, but I won’t be holding my breath.
