Matt at Left in the West is reporting that the Missoula 9 (I have a hard time typing this with a straight face) are receiving their suspensions today. While the longest suspension thus far is only 5 days, along with the fines and community service, there’s a powerful and sad message being sent by the UM administration along with the penalty: we’re willing to ignore the concerns of large portions of our student body, and they jeopardize much more than time or money if they force us to confront their issues. It’s a sad day when a university–a supposed bastion of free communication–feels that it needs to issue a chilling effect on its own campus.
