This is out of left field… According to the Washington Post, Sen. Baucus’ chief of staff Jim Messina is leaving to take the same role with the Barack Obama campaign out of Chicago. It’s no secret in Democratic circles that Messina’s good at what he does (so this move isn’t a surprise in that respect), but this change a surprise given that Sen. Baucus himself is up for reelection this cycle. Thankfully, he’s up against the least competition he’s seen in political lifetime.
It should be interesting to see what happens in Montana Democratic politics with would seem to be a bit of a power vacuum as a result. I get the impression that most major political decisions–at least those that relate to campaigns–get vetted through Mr. Messina. Once again, it’s cool to see Montana continuing to impact the political landscape on a national level. I really hope this means that the Obama campaign is going to make a full-force effort to compete in the Rocky Mountain west.
